Retaining Walls Tyler TX - Concrete Walls, Landscape Curbing & Borders
Plenty of Tyler lots roll, and a slope that washes onto the driveway every storm or leaves the backyard unusable is a job for a retaining wall. We build poured concrete retaining walls with footings and drainage, plus the smaller pieces that keep a yard in order: landscape curbing, mow strips and bed borders.

Permits Come First
The City of Tyler's Development FAQ says every retaining wall needs a permit, and a wall more than 4 feet tall needs plans signed and sealed by a licensed engineer. HomeGuide says walls over 4 feet need extra engineering and deeper foundations, which raises the cost a lot. For a tall wall we build to the engineer's design; for a short one we still work from a drawing the City can review.

Drainage Makes or Breaks a Wall
Most failed walls failed because of water, not concrete. HomeGuide says every retaining wall needs a drainage system to prevent water pressure that bows, cracks or topples walls. Basic drainage means a perforated pipe at the base, gravel backfill and weep holes. With roughly 42 inches of rain a year in Tyler's NOAA normals, the drain behind the wall matters as much as the wall. HomeGuide puts a French drain at $10 to $85 or more per linear foot nationally, depending on complexity.

Poured Concrete Walls: National Prices
HomeGuide's national average for retaining walls is $35 to $65 per square foot of wall face, including materials and labor. It lists poured concrete walls at $20 to $45 per square foot and calls them the strongest option, one that can be stamped, stained or carved. It also notes most retaining wall contractors have a project minimum of $1,500 to $3,000, and that clay or rocky soil can raise labor costs by up to 50 percent. Our quote shows excavation, footing, wall, drainage and backfill on separate lines.

Landscape Curbing and Mow Strips
Continuous concrete curbing keeps mulch in the beds and grass out, and gives the mower a clean edge to ride. HomeGuide lists landscape curbing at $5 to $18 per linear foot installed nationally, or $400 to $2,200 for an average job. By material alone, poured concrete edging runs $2 to $7 per linear foot and decorative or stamped curbing $3.50 to $8.50. We can tint curbing to match a stained walk or colored concrete elsewhere on the lot.

Where Walls Meet Flatwork
A wall often comes with a patio or a level parking spot at its base. If that's in the plan, we'll quote the two together; see concrete patios.
