Exposed Aggregate & Stained Concrete Tyler TX - Colored & Decorative

Not every slab needs a stamp to look good. Exposed aggregate, integral color and concrete stain give a Tyler driveway, walk, patio or pool deck a finished look with less work than stamping and fewer seams to maintain.

Exposed Aggregate

Exposed aggregate is made by washing the thin layer of cement paste off the top of fresh concrete so the stone in the mix shows. The result is a pebbly, grippy surface that hides red dirt, pine needles and tire marks better than smooth gray concrete. The City's standard detail for driveways and sidewalks even has a note for it: on washed-aggregate drives, the joints use 1-by-2 or 1-by-4 treated or redwood strips. Angi prices the exposed-aggregate finish at $2 to $3 a square foot nationally, on top of the slab. The look depends on the stone, so we'll show you samples of what the local plants can supply before you choose.

Integral Color

Integral color is mixed into the concrete at the plant, so the color runs all the way through the slab. A chipped edge or a worn corner stays the same shade, which surface color can't promise. Earth tones like tan, buff and terra cotta suit brick homes and East Texas red soil. Light colors stay cooler underfoot in summer.

Stained Concrete

Stain goes on a cured slab. Acid-based stains react with the concrete and give a mottled, marbled look that's different on every slab; water-based stains offer more colors and a more even result. Stain is also a way to bring an old, sound patio back without pouring. Angi's national price for stained concrete is $5 to $10 a square foot. Stain is only as good as the surface under it, so we clean and test the slab first, and a stained slab needs a sealer on top; see concrete sealing.

Mixing Finishes

A common Tyler combination is an exposed-aggregate field with a smooth, colored border, or a broom-finish driveway with a stained front walk. If you want a stone or brick pattern pressed into the surface, that's stamped concrete. If the old concrete is worn but sound, an overlay can carry color too.
