Concrete Sidewalk & Step Repair Tyler TX - Walks, Stoops & Landings

Front walks, side paths to the gate and the steps up to the porch are the concrete people trip on. In Tyler we replace heaved and broken sidewalk squares, pour new walkways and rebuild crumbling steps and stoops.

The Public Sidewalk Is Yours to Fix

Under Tyler City Code Sec. 10-233, the owner of the abutting property repairs a defective public sidewalk, and after written notice the work has to begin within 15 days and be finished within 30. Sec. 10-232 makes it unlawful to change a public sidewalk's width or grade, so a replacement square has to go back the way the City built it. Street-side work also needs a City license, bond and permit under Sec. 10-241.

What the City's Sidewalk Detail Calls For

The City of Tyler's standard detail for driveways and sidewalks, revised May 14 2021, sets these rules for public walks:

  • 4 inches thick, and 6 inches where the walk crosses a driveway.
  • Subgrade compacted to 95 percent of standard Proctor density.
  • Cross slope no more than 3/16 inch per foot, or 2 percent.
  • #3 bars at 18 inches on center each way.

The City's paving notes add 3,000 psi concrete at 28 days, 1-inch expansion joints every 40 feet with control joints every 4 or 5 feet, and expansion joints sealed with approved material. Under UDC Table 10-230, a sidewalk on a local street is 4 feet wide, and one built at the back of the curb must be at least 5 feet.

On private walks we follow the same basics: a solid base, a slope that sheds water, and joints where cracks should go.

Steps, Stoops and Landings

The City's standard step detail uses a 7½-inch rise and a 12-inch run, with a 5½-inch rise allowed with the City Engineer's approval, plus a ¾-inch chamfer on exposed corners. Even on private steps, keeping every riser the same height matters more than the exact number, because an uneven step is the one people miss. HomeGuide puts poured concrete steps at $200 to $500 per step nationally, and removing old steps at $250 to $500. We give steps a broom or textured finish for grip after a rain.

National Price Ranges

HomeGuide lists new concrete sidewalks at $7 to $17 a square foot nationally, and removing 50 feet of sidewalk at $750 to $1,250. If a square sank but didn't break, raising it may be cheaper; see concrete leveling and mudjacking. Business frontage and ramps are covered on ADA curb ramps and commercial sidewalks.
