The Handbook of Texas describes Rusk County soil as light-colored deep sandy loam with clay and lignite underneath, and the clay is good enough that it's made into bricks locally. For concrete, that means a loose top layer over ground that holds water. We don't pour on the loose sand. It gets stripped where the slab goes and replaced with a compacted base, and the finished grade is pitched away from the house.
