Two Counties, One Address

More than three-fourths of Kilgore is in Gregg County and the rest reaches south into Rusk County. That split can matter when a job needs a permit or a driveway tie-in, so we check who has jurisdiction for the address before we set a pour date. City streets go through the City of Kilgore; state highways like U.S. 259 go through TxDOT.

An Oil Town's Concrete

After the East Texas Oil Field came in during 1930, Kilgore filled with derricks; Wikipedia says the town passed 12,000 people by 1936 and had over 1,000 wooden derricks by the 1940s. Sixty steel replicas stand today. On an older property the real question is usually whether a cracked or root-heaved driveway can be patched or should come out. We'll tell you which, and why.

Gravelly Ground Near the Sabine

TSHA describes Gregg County as gently sloping to hilly, with well-drained to moderately well-drained loamy and gravelly soils, and about 47 inches of rain a year. Well-drained ground is a good start, but slope still decides where water goes. On a hillside lot the forms get stepped or the edge gets thickened so the slab doesn't undercut when a storm moves through.
